On Being A Writer: The Art Of The Juggle: Part 2

Hey Guys!

Remember the conversation we had, about juggling your time? Awesome! At the end of the post, I promised to show you a few ways I manage my time. & believe me, it's not easy! I constantly assess my schedule, to make sure that I'm making time for every aspect of my life. Every week, I try new things, some practices become permanent and others get tossed. No idea is right or wrong. Do what works for you!

This is what my schedule looks like, without any intentionality:

7-8am: Get dressed and head out of the door, for work.
8-9am: Travel on the train. Listen to Kendrick, J. Cole, etc.
9-10am: Settle in. Say good morning to everyone. Answer emails.
10-11am: Answer emails, answer text messages, answer a personal call or two.
11-12pm: Order lunch, run to a meeting.
12-2pm: Sit in meeting, take notes, eat lunch.
2-3pm: Staff meeting. Staff saunters in late.
3-5pm: Run program, answer emails, talk to staff.
5-7pm: Same as above. Dismiss students.
7-8pm: Shutdown building. Finalize work for tomorrow.
8-9pm: Travel home. Listen to more music.
9-10pm: Cook, talk on the phone.
10-11pm: Eat, watch Netflix.
11-12am: Write blog, for the next day.
12-1am: Post blog, create image, schedule links.
1-2am: Watch more Netflix, fall asleep during.

There's a lot wrong with what's going on above. I could've been working on the train, which totals two hours of idle time. I should've taken a lunch break. Life/work balance is important. I could've had more time to do that if I'd focused on answering my emails and not my phone. It also gives me time to work on something else. I should've nixed my conversation while cooking. It probably took me more time to cook, because I was on the phone. Netflix could have waited until the weekend.

Let's try this again:

7-8am: Get dressed and head out of the door, for work.
8-9am: Travel on the train. Outline blog, for this evening.
9-10am: Settle in. Say good morning to everyone. Answer emails.
10-10:30am: Finish answering emails.
10:30-11:30am: Take a lunch break. Start writing blog post, while eating.
11:30-2pm: Arrive early to the meeting. Prep, sit in meeting, take notes.
2-3pm: Staff meeting. Staff saunters in late. Answer emails, on my phone, while they saunter in.
3-5pm: Run program, answer emails, talk to staff.
5-7pm: Same as above. Dismiss students.
7-8pm: Shutdown building. Finalize work for tomorrow.
8-9pm: Travel home. Finish writing blog on the train, using tablet.
9-10pm: Cook and eat.
10-11pm: Post finished blog. Answer a few texts.
11pm: Go to sleep. Get enough rest, so that you're energized for tomorrow.

With cutting down on a few things, I was able to cut three hours off of my evening. This allowed me to get some much needed sleep. Now, I'd like for you to try!
